Murdered on way to Midnight Mass: Grandad brutally attacked just yard from home
The father-of-four was set upon just yards from his home in Sheffield, police said today
A church organist was brutally murdered on his way to play at Midnight Mass.
Alan Greaves, 68, was set upon just yards from his home and left with horrific injuries.
He was rushed to hospital after being found on a pavement by a pizza delivery driver.
But the dad-of-four died despite a four-hour emergency operation.
Last night wife Maureen was being comforted by her family as police launched a murder probe. She was too upset to comment.
Canon Simon Bessant, of St Saviour’s C of E church where Mr Greaves was an organist, said: “He was walking here to play at midnight and we all thought it very unusual when he didn’t turn up.
“Then I had a phone call on Christmas morning and spent most of Christmas Day with the family in the hospital.
"He has been the victim of a very violent attack.
“He was very much a gentle giant. There is no sense of understanding of why such a thing should happen.
"He was a good man and this was an evil act.”
Mr Greaves is thought to have been attacked in High Green, Sheffield, around 11am on Christmas Eve.
He was found 15 minutes later collapsed outside a school just 250 yards from St Saviour’s. Mr Greaves died from his severe head injuries on Thursday night.
Det Supt Matt Fenwick said: “The motive of the attack is unclear.”
Mr Greaves, who has four adult children, is a retired social worker and had been a lay preacher for nine years.
