Fresh appeal in case of slain teen hitchhikers Fiona Burns and John Lee

HOMICIDE Squad detectives and the families of murdered teenage hitch-hikers Fiona Burns and John Lee have appealed for information to find the killer 21 years after the pair's bodies were found.

Fiona, 15, from Langwarrin, and John, 14, from Adelaide, were last seen hitchhiking between Adelaide and Melbourne along the Western Hwy between October 9 and 11, 1990.

A couple found Ms Burns' body at a truck parking bay between Kaniva and Bordertown, about 1.6km from the South Australian border on October 18.

Police found Mr Lee's body soon after.

Both had been stabbed to death.

Police said in February a caller, who gave information about a car believed to have been used in the gruesome double slaying, raised hopes of cracking the cold case.

Officers appealed for that person to contact them again.

Homicide Squad Det-Insp John Potter said someone knew exactly what happened to Fiona and John.

"It is to those people and their closest confidants that we are appealing to," Det-Insp Potter said.

"When a child is killed, society loses some of its innocence, when two children are callously murdered and the killer or killers are not brought to justice, the whole community carries the burden.

"The families of Fiona and John need and, indeed, deserve closure, for 21 years they have suffered not knowing what happened to their loved ones and have waited to see someone brought to justice.

"Their children were taken away from them, they were just kids, aged 14 and 15. If they were still alive today they would most probably have families of their own."

Police have received information from the Victorian and South Australian public after community appeals last year and earlier this year.

Det-Insp John Potter said the information was investigated but had not provided the breakthrough needed to solve the case, which has a $100,000 reward.

"We are appealing for information Australia wide, the fact that their bodies were found at a truck stop on an interstate highway gives rise to the possibility that the person or persons responsible may well have resided in any state or territory in Australia," he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
