Man, engulfed in flames, enters Maryland church; pastor dead
By Sarah Aarthun, CNN
November 28, 2013 -- Updated 0810 GMT (1610 HKT)
(CNN) -- Members of an Ocean City, Maryland, church are mourning this week after a bizarre fire left two people dead, including the church's longtime pastor, and a woman critically injured.
The blaze started Tuesday when a man -- his clothes and body aflame -- entered St. Paul's by the Sea church in a section where services are provided to the area's needy.
"Somebody tried to put him out and then the building caught fire from there," a witness told CNN affiliate WJLA.
The fire, possibly helped by the use of an accelerant, spread quickly, according to fire and police officials.
The man, identified by Ocean City Police as 56-year-old John Raymond Sterner, was found dead inside the building by firefighters. The church pastor, the Rev. David Dingwall, was found unconscious on the second floor of the church amid "heavy smoke and heat conditions," authorities said. He later died at a hospital. A third victim, a woman, was critically injured, police said.
It's not yet clear how Sterner came to be on fire.
The Rev. Canon Heather Cook of the Episcopal Diocese of Easton told The Baltimore Sun that a church parishioner and volunteer at the food bank that operates out of the church rectory were preparing to open when the man came in, screaming for help.
"I'm heartbroken. I'm sick," church organist Shirley Hailey told WJLA. "It's just horrible. Absolutely horrible."
Fire Chief Chris Larmore called it "a very tragic day for our community."
The beach town is a family-friendly weekend destination in the summer for much of the Washington area.

PORTLAND -- A bomb squad was called in after an "improvised explosive device" was found near a Southeast Portland church Tuesday, police said.
Police were called just after 10:30 a.m. to the report of a suspicious device near a dumpster outside the Montavilla United Methodist Church, at 232 SE 80th Ave., said Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Officers at the scene called in a bomb squad and the device was destroyed just after noon, Simpson said.
There were no evacuations and no injuries were reported.
Portland Fire & Rescue's arson squad is now leading the investigation.  The Federal Bureau of Investigation and ATF agents are helping search for a suspect.

3 Ware teens charged in connection with vandalism spree

WARE — Police Chief Dennis M. Healey said three male teens are facing charges in connection with 13 incidents in October and November where homes, churches and cars were either vandalized or set on fire.
Symbols, slurs, sexually explicit images and, in the case of United Church of Ware, an expletive directed at God and the words "Catholic burning," were spray-painted, Healey said.
Healey credited the work of Detective Tod Bertini and Officer Chris Adams, as well as Fire Lt. Chris Gagnon, who investigated the case, and solved it before "something really bad happened."
The boys, two 14-year-olds and a 15-year-old, will have their cases heard in juvenile court in Hadley. They face multiple counts of arson of a dwelling, destroying or defacing a memorial to the dead, defacing property and attempt to burn a building.
