Arson suspect arrested in Burlington church fire

As another hour hits, no bells will toll. The College Street Congregational Church's steeple barely still stands.
"When I see the flames and everything and the smoke, that's when I knew it was really bad," said Poncho Trotman, a neighbor.
When Trotman stepped out of his house a little before 6 a.m. Wednesday, he says the clock tower looked like a torch.
"I thought the thing was going to burn down, you know, like the way it was going," he said.
Burlington Fire Chief Seth Lasker says getting close enough to the fire proved one of the biggest challenges.
"Some of the stairways are wooden ladder-type stairwells leading up to the higher points of the building -- and those had burned away," Lasker said.
They couldn't get to the fire from the inside.
"Had to put up aerial ladders and put the fire out from outside," Lasker said.
They blasted the bell tower with thousands of gallons of water.
"It is unusual," Lasker said.
That's what they said at first about the fire starting in the steeple. Soon we learned police had an arson suspect in custody, Aliaksandr Bychkou, 32, of South Burlington. In fact, he was in police custody before anyone realized there was a fire.
The church's janitor noticed an open door and called police, who found Bychkou in the church. Moments later, the bell tower erupted in flames.
Bychkou now faces arson charges.

Поджегшего в США церковь белоруса признали вменяемым
В США белоруса Александра Бычкова, который утром 23 октября поджег церковь в городе Берлингтон (штат Вермонт), признали вменяемым. При этом сумму, которую необходимо заплатить, чтобы его могли выпустить под залог, увеличили в десять раз до 250 тыс. долларов. Если такая сумма будет заплачена, белоруса переведут в Бостонскую тюрьму, где он будет ожидать решения суда о его депортации.
При этом жена Александра Бычкова Татьяна Якушева не сможет заплатить за него залог, поскольку ей также угрожает депортация. Вместе семейная пара возвращаться в Беларусь не собирается. Ранее супруги уже просили политического убежища в США, сообщает местная пресса.
Знакомый Бычкова 65-летний Джозеф Рубал заявил, что у него не было проблем с белорусом, хотя и признал, что у белоруса были некоторые психические расстройства, которые проявились после рождения ребенка в августе этого года.
"Мы вели интересные дискуссии о политике и философии", - сказал он, отметив, что Александр Бычков говорил, что Беларусью правит диктатор.
Рубал также показал журналистам рисунки белоруса, в основном пятиконечные звезды, открытые окна, круги вместе со словами "тревога", "горе", "депрессия", а также аббревиатуры некоторых психических расстройств. "Он искал послание в некоторых символах", - отметил знакомый обвиняемого.
Между тем сожженный белорусом шпиль церкви, который был признан опасным, снесен. Ущерб, нанесенный Александром Бычковым, оценивается в 1 млн долларов.

Belarus man to be deported for Burlington church arson

BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Friday, Aliaksandr Bychkou admitted setting a fire within the College Street Congregational Church.
"I don't remember everything, I don't remember much," Bychkou said.
The 32-year-old Belarus native says voices told him to ignite the church.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the October fire, but not before it claimed the historic steeple.
Bychkou faced more than a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to arson and burglary. But prosecutors agreed not to seek time beyond what he has served already in exchange for his promise not to fight deportation.
After leaving the courthouse Bychkou went straight to federal custody.
"This resolution made the most sense because at the end of the day, Mr. Bychkou forfeited his right to be here," Chittenden County Prosecutor T.J. Donovan said.
Though parishioners did not testify in court, Donovan says prosecutors did consult church leadership-- who approved-- before pursuing the deal.
"I would like to say that I am very sorry and I would like to say that I am interest to go home to deal with my issues and thanks church for understanding," Bychkou said.
Bychkou's attorney says his client did seek mental health assistance in the weeks leading up to the incident. He'll try to rebuild his life back home, as a congregation rebuilds its home.
Bychkou does not have a criminal record outside these charges.
He came to the U.S. seeking asylum. He has faced deportation previously in Utah, though it's not clear why that process began or how he remained in the country.
